Onboarding

For the last two years I have been focused on finishing school and getting a job. Most of my efforts have been aimed towards that goal either directly, through studying, attending classes, job fairs, and doing internships or indirectly, through staying healthy, keeping a clean house positive relationships with the people I love.

After graduating in late May, my focus shifted from finishing school, to relocating for my new job in Boston, 3,000 miles from home. The cost, logistics, and emotional challenges kept me fully engaged for the month of June and most of July.

Work began on July 6, at which point the furnishings in my home contained a box spring, mattress, and a papasan chair. My wife Shannon and I have spent most of our free time the last few weeks finding the individual pieces of furniture that will fill our new home.

Today marks the beginning of week 3 as an Academy Account Executive (AAE) in the SAP Sales Academy for Early Talent. This month work consists of getting familiar with all the new toys we have been given, “tools of the trade,” and getting familiar with the mammoth business which we are becoming a part of.

In the Boston office there are three other AAEs with me. We have not been instructed to be here at any particular time, or to stay for any given length. Each week we have a list of activities to do, mostly watch videos and respond to a short series of questions. We have been assigned two books to read by the end of the month, and we are permitted to work from home, or other offices if we so chose.

I like to start my day in the office around 7:00 AM, Monday through Friday. This gives me a chance to see the different people come in, and get a feeling for what goes on here. I am most productive in the morning, and I enjoy making the most of this time. Thursday and Friday I like to work from home. Being married, my wife moved with me across the country, away from all of her friends, family, and anything familiar. Having the flexibility to be at home with her to ease the adjustment period has been invaluable. Its nice to spend some extra time together before our first month apart in August.
